Basically, here are some of the reasons the confederates where doomed from the start.
- First of all, the union had far more advantages then the south including some very important ones.
- As previously stated, the confederates where out numbered 4 to1. this means that only one of every four union solders would need to fire there rifle and hit someone.
Even if the confederates had more solders it would still take time to destroy an army four times as large as their own. time they did not have. - Jordi also mentioned that it was only a matter of time until the confederates had to give up. this makes sense because even if the confederates fought much better than the union, in time they will get worn down, and run out of troops and resources. The longer the war dragged on, the more the confederate funds diminished. This made it difficult to fund the war on the confederates side.
- One of the south’s greatest advantages is the fact that they know the lay of the land. they could plan ambushes and traps to give them the edge, however they did not utilize that advantage to its full potential as they ventured north. As they headed north the lay of the land became a union advantage.
- Michael commented that the south had ironclads that had the potential of decimating the unions clamp around the south. the only problem with this statement it that the south could not fund such ships. They create a single ironclad that was destroyed by the unions iron ship the surveyor,(I dont think that’s what it was called, I’m going to check with Mr. T on that.) which the union could afford to make in larger quantities.
- Michael also mentioned about the south’s horses being used to supply the southern army. The thing about horses is they can’t carry as much as a fully loaded train. Horses also need to be watered and fed, and food is a resource also needed by the troops.
- At the battle of Gettysburg some thing that if the confederates would have taken little Roundtop they could have gotten guns on top of the hill and decimated the union line. The problem with this is that guns are heavy and hard to move. Getting them on little Roundtop would take a great effort. by the time the guns would have gotten to the top, the union could have taken back the hill or bombarded it with there own already mounted guns driving the confederates away.
Overall, the confederates had no chance from the start for the above reasons.

i fully agree with tom. The union was much stronger for all of his reasons. The union overall was better and would last longer in a war with the confederates. The confederates were doomed all along. It proves that because the union won the war.
I agree that the confederate were doomed and that Union had alot more advantages. The only advantages that the Confederate had was that the soldiers new the land and they had good officers.
i agree with Tom. The union had so many more advantages. Not only did they have a larger population and the majority of the factories to produce firearms quicker but also the anaconda plan was genius. This would stop all imports and exports to the south making them even more poor and would therefor slow down their production rate even further. The confederacy was doomed to fail.
